Workshop Description: National Statistics show a troubling rise in alcohol and drug use beginning in early middle school. The presenters provided relevant national data, including: root causes, risk and protective factors, and the effects on student learning and well-being. The Being Adept approach was demonstrated with a sample lesson including a five-minute video showing the effects of chemical substances on the brain. Being Adept provides a turnkey procedure for implementing a prevention program in middle school or high school, including both the high touch and low touch approaches. The presentation concluded with a Q and A session with three panel members.
