Parents and Families
Many times families are invited to participate in sessions because they can help nurture change and development for an adolescent. Family relationships are an important factor in an adolescent's psychological health. Involving families in treatment solutions is oftentimes very beneficial. Family therapy can also be mandated by the treatment (such as Family Based Therapy for the treatment of eating disorders).
When the relationship between parents and their child needs attention, parents are encouraged to directly participate in therapy sessions. They may receive a general update on progress, assistance with parenting issues, or a sharing of information that their son or daughter has authorized. Parents are encouraged to be open and forthcoming with any and all information about their child to assure a well informed and comprehensive treatment plan.
